World Book Night in the UK coincides with World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April every year, to celebrate anniversaries of the likes of Shakespeare, Cervantes, Nabokov and Pla.
World Book Night is a platform for encouraging volunteers to get great books into the hands of people in our communities for whom reading is not yet a go-to leisure activity - the time-poor, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged included.
'The Icelanders Cometh' shares the aims and objectives of World Book Night and, in addition, showcases some of the literary talent and heritage of the Icelandic nation.
On 23 April 2016, whatever funds have been raised by the deadline will pay for books to be given to libraries in the UK, to help make British readers better acquainted with Icelandic authors.
This project is an introduction to an Iceland yet to be fully explored: in every sense of the phrase, it is the tip of the iceberg.
